What is English Level 1?

Functional Skills English is all about improving the quality of your speaking, reading and written English. Improving the quality of your English can help you when it comes to everyday life, whether you are working, looking for work or simply want to help those around you.

You will improve your communication and can gain a relevant qualification to help your career. What you will learn:

  • To improve your spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • How to obtain and identify relevant information
  • How to respond effectively
  • Understand how to ask relevant questions and respond effectively
  • Be able to communicate information clearly both verbally and written (such as reports and presentations).
  • How to express and communicate ideas, arguments and opinions clearly
  • Be able to follow discussions and make effective contributions.
  • Understand organisational and structural features and use them to locate relevant information

You will receive a Level 1 Functional Skills English qualification on successful completion of the course and examinations.

English Functional Skills Level 2 

What is English Level 2?

A Functional Skills English Level 2 qualification is equivalent to a GCSE grade C or 4. The qualification takes your English skills a step forward going into more detail on your understanding of text, verbal and written communication.

What you will learn:

  • More in-depth spelling, punctuation and grammar – so that you can communicate more effectively
  • How to construct complex sentences and paragraphs
  • How to identify relevant information from extended texts and presentations
  • How to respond effectively to detailed questions
  • Be able to communicate complex issues from detailed information
  • Be able to present information, ideas and opinions clearly and effectively
  • Adapt your writing style to the audience
  • How to identify the main points and most important details
  • Be able to identify implicit and inferred meanings in texts
  • How to research and use referral texts to find relevant information, analyse and present this effectively
  • You will receive a Level 2 Functional Skills English qualification on passing of your examinations.

Successful completion of the course will have given you the English knowledge necessary for a wide range of Apprenticeships, qualifications and jobs.
