Involuntary Redundancies Cause a Drop in Employee Trust
The Index of Leadership Trust 2010 report, published today (1 September) by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and Management Today magazine, has found that employees of organisations who made involuntary redundancies during the recession have lost trust in their CEOs. The report suggests that employees blame difficulties on poor management.
Dale Morgan, CEO of TCHC the organisation which delivers the Leadership and Management programme in the East of England, said:
“During difficult times CEOs and senior managers are often used as a scapegoat. It is therefore more important than ever for companies to focus on developing the skills of their leaders, equipping them to manage the situation effectively. Leaders should concentrate on getting their workforce on board during the transformation process, ensuring that teams are always informed.
“In my experience leaders of small and medium sized companies often feel isolated when faced with difficult decisions such as involuntary redundancies. Sometimes having an external person with an objective outlook to talk to can help you manage your own anxiety.
“Senior managers and directors of such organisations can definitely benefit from business coaching or mentoring during these times, activities that may be eligible for funding through the Leadership and Management programme.”
Sarah Willis, Managing Director, Russen & Turner a company who has made use of the Leadership and Management fund, said:
“The impact of the recession and resulting slump in the property market led to a substantial reorganisation of our business through divestment and downsizing. Our leadership challenge was to maintain the morale and operational effectiveness of the business that remained, to enable us to trade out of the downturn. Without the support of TCHC and the training we received under the Leadership and Management programme, it is unlikely that we would have survived.”
